Tanner Mullens has eventful Show-Me Shootout weekend
After a week hiatus, the Summit USMTS National Championship was back on track Friday and Saturday for the 15th annual Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout at Lucas Oil Speedway. Tanner Mullens and his Mel Hambelton Ford No. 02 Modified team were at the Wheatland, Missouri, speed plant chasing a $5,000 winner’s share on both days.
On Friday, 41 Modified competitors were at the 3/8-mile “Diamond of Dirt Tracks,” where Mullens ran into trouble early with a blown rear end in hot laps. He missed his heat race and came onto the track in his B-Main one lap down. He still managed an eighth-place finish, but needed a provisional to start 24th in the 40-lap feature. He picked up six spots in the race and came home 18th.
Saturday saw Mullens have a better night as forty USMTS Modifieds filled the Lucas Oil Speedway pit area. He finished fifth in his heat, but took the checkered flag in his B-Feature and rolled off 14th in the main event. He drove to a 12th-place result in the 50-lap finale.
With the Wheatland weekend in the rearview mirror, Mullens sits sixth in the USMTS point standings.
