Mullens takes top-10 finish at home track in Ed Gressel Memorial opener

Wichita, Kansas, native Tanner Mullens raced close to home over the weekend as the Summit USMTS schedule hit Park City’s 81 Speedway in the Sunflower State.

With 35 USMTS Modifieds on the property for the second annual Ed Gressel Memorial opener on Friday, Mullens finished fourth in his heat race and won his B-Main. He started 19th in the 35-lap, $5,000-to-win feature and steered to a 10th-place finish on the 3/8-mile track, despite a car not to to the driver’s liking.

The next night, Mullens was one of 40 USMTS drivers looking to cash a $10,000 winner’s check in the event finale. He drove from ninth to fourth in his heat, putting him ninth on the grid to start the 40-lap main event. Mullens climbed inside the top five in the race but suffered a blown engine while running third, relegating him to a 19th-place result.

After the 81 Speedway programs, Mullens holds the seventh spot in the USMTS standings.

A pair of scheduled USMTS mid-week shows at Nebraska's Off Road Speedway and Beatrice Speedway were rained out on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
