Mullens picks up top-10 finish on opening weekend at Vado
The 2024 season kicked off for Tanner Mullens on Saturday and Sunday as he took part in the first two Modified events of the 18th annual Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout at Vado (N.M.) Speedway Park.
Mullens’ Mel Hambelton Ford No. 02 machine was one of 60 Modifieds in the pits at the 3/8-mile oval when racing action got underway on Saturday. He finished third in his heat race and won his B-Feature from the pole, positioning him 18th on the grid for the night’s 25-lap, $2,000-to-win feature. Mullens moved forward five spots in the main event to claim a 13th-place result.
Despite unfavorable weather conditions on Sunday, 57 Modified entries were on hand for another $2,000-to-win show. Mullens took the checkered flag in his heat and started 13th in the 25-lap A-Main. He picked up four spots to register his first top-10 of the year with a ninth-place finish.
The Wild West Shootout picks up again on Wednesday, January 10.
